Day 3 Challenge: Say Yes to My Toddler’s Every Reading Request

Day 3

Today was a success!

I feel like today was more laid back and relaxing. I didn’t stress so hard about if I was going to fail or not. It might have been the reason to a more successful day with this challenge. I never had to say “no” to my toddler’s reading requests. We read every single book he requested to read today.

If I was busy with something I said I would as soon as I finished up what I was doing. I didn’t wait til I finished the whole task (like finish washing all the dishes in the sink) like I normally do. I just finished the immediate task (like finishing washing the pan I was currently washing). This worked out so well. Normally when I’d tell him we can read after I’m done with my task he would already be on to something else, so I would just move on to a new task too. But with this new method of just finishing the step in the task I was on, he would still be waiting for me in the chair.

We didn’t read as many books as we had in previous days only reading 10 books; however, there were several books he would “read” to me first flipping the pages and telling me what was happening. He started doing this while he was waiting for me to finish the step in the task I was doing before I could join him in the chair. So when I joined him in the chair, I just let him continue. It was so cute seeing how excited he was to read the books and tell me what was going on on the pages.

Will I continue on with this challenge of saying yes to my toddler’s every reading request?

Yes, but not right away. I want to be able to give into these precious moments and be present with him, but I also want to make sure he understands there are tasks that mom needs to do each day. I don’t want to teach him that I will always drop what I am doing to read to him. It has been a great lesson for me in finding methods to say “yes” to my toddler’s reading requests more often and learning to balance quality time with daily tasks. I have seen many wonderful changes in my son when it comes to his joy for reading.
